It was so calm in the bathroom. She dipped her hand into the lukewarm suds of the bath, and let it linger. The foamy bubbles collected around her fingers. Her daughter, gurgling and cooing, grasped onto her ring finger and began to splash and hyperventilate the way excited kids do. Shush shush. This isn’t where she expected herself to be fifteen years ago, covered in mashed peas and watching over someone so small. They told her it was impossible. The odds were more likely she’d get cancer than a child by 45. But there She was; an undeniable soapy miracle.
